Nicholas’ First Baseball Game

On Saturday, we had the opportunity to witness something akin to cat herding - the first baseball game of the season for the boy.

So imagine, if you will, a collection of about 24 kindergarteners in full uniform, scattered haphazardly around the infield dirt (with a few in the shallow outfield for good measure), with none of them really having much of a grasp of baseball. The never-ending rains have kept the fields pretty damp, so practice time has been limited. But they have to start somewhere, so we hoped for the best and turned them loose.

It was the kind of entertainment money can't buy.

I've assembled a gallery of images (50 total), so inserting them into this posting would make the page both long and unmanageable. Instead, I'm trying some new tools to deliver them. My apologies to those viewing on an iPad or iPhone - it's using Flash, but I didn't want to hold up getting these posted. I'm working on getting them posted in an iOS-friendly format. Give me a little bit of time to sort that out.

There are a few themes that you'll probably notice; here are a few hints to the photos:
  • He's got the whole crotch-grab thing down already, all self taught. Must be in the male DNA somewhere.
  • Many of them had some focus issues; it won't be uncommon to see a glove over a face or head, and drawing/playing in the dirt seems to be a popular alternative to participating.
  • The boy is not very big, so the batting helmet looks a lot like a fancy bucket on his head.
  • There was a bathroom emergency at one point - you should be able to figure it out.
  • He did get a chance to hit the ball, and did fairly well.

I hope you enjoy the images.
